Schools Career Guidance Committee

Our SCG committee aim to 'Inspire the Next Generation' by providing Diverse & Inclusive information on “Energy Transition” skills, career pathways and career journeys thus guiding pupils towards positive destinations. We work with schools and colleges and other organisations like TechFest to promote STEM subjects and careers in the energy sector.

Role description: School Career Fair volunteers

What will I be asked to do? We provide stand materials (pop up banners, tablecloth, some printed material, lego boats for display) which you will need to set up at your allocated space. Once you are set up, you talk to the parents and pupils who approach the stand. You talk about yourself and your career journey, energy careers in general, STEM subjects and the PlanIt website: an online careers resource for schools.
How much time will this take? Usually career fairs last for a couple of hours, mostly in the evening although some schools hold them during the day.
Where do I have to go? Whichever school is holding the career fair. We do not try to support every career fair in Grampian as there are too many. You choose which ones you would like to attend and provide your own transport. It helps if you have a car as the stand materials are too bulky to be easily carried on public transport.
Will I be alone? We try not to send anyone alone. Ideally we like about three people at our stand so you will have company!
Do I need a specific skillset? An ability to talk about yourself and your career and a passion for the energy industry and STEM generally. We encourage all our SCG volunteers to become STEM Ambassadors: being a STEM Ambassador gives you access to a wealth of volunteering opportunities and CPD as well as PVG accreditation. PVG accreditation is not essential for much of our volunteering opportunities with schools but it is worth considering.
What do I get out of it? An enormous sense of satisfaction in inspiring the next generation into careers in engineering and the energy industry! Additionally, volunteering is excellent for CPD and for fulfilling the community aspects of professional membership applications. Talking to people builds confidence and you may get the opportunity to do small presentations or classroom workshops.
Are there career fairs coming up? Visit our SCG Committee page for more information.
