'I was one of the 61 survivors' - presented by Joe Meanen
November 2024
We were kindly joined by Joe Meanen at our evening meeting on Wednesday 27th November 2024. Joe shared his intensely personal story of the events on Piper Alpha on 6th July 1988 and the aftermath for survivors.
Whether or not you believe in a higher power, luck, miracles or anything else that exists on an ethereal plane, it is very difficult to rationalise Joe's incredible survival as being independent of divine intervention. Despite this, Joe related his experiences with humility, pragmatism and empathy for all those caught up in the disaster including families, friends, rescuers and the wider offshore community. His voice brought those events from 36 years ago right into the room and were a sobering reminder that offshore safety does not happen without constant review and reevaluation. A very quiet and attentive audience - many of whom were not born in 1988 - hung on his every word and judging by feedback afterwards, were profoundly impacted by Joe's presentation.
Joe is involved with Pound for Piper, a charity set up to ensure that the memorial and gardens at Hazlehead Park are maintained to a high standard for years to come and remain a special place for solace, comfort and contemplation. We would encourage you to visit their website and donate if you can.
